Turkey 수멜라 수도원(Sumela Monastery) 터키 이스탄불에서 북동부 방향으로 버스로 18시간의 거리에 흑해 연안의 중심 도시 트라브존이 있습니다. 그리고 이곳에서 다시 남쪽으로 54km 떨어진 곳에 마취카(Macka)라는 지역이 있고 이곳의 알틴데르 계곡(Altindere valley)의 깊숙한 곳에는 모 마리아(Meryem Ana)수도원으로 잘 알려진 수멜라 수도원(Sumela Monastery)이 자리하고 있습니다. 보기에도 위태로운 가파른 절벽위에 있는 이 수도원은 491~518년에 아나스타시우스 황제에 의해 세워졌으므로 1000년이 넘는 역사를 가지고 있습니다. 수도원의 천정에는 어린 예수, 성모 마리아가 그의 조상과 성인에 의해 둘러싸여 있으며, 북쪽 벽으로는 천사의 호위를 받은 성모 마리아와 코뮤네스 왕조의 초상화가 그려져 있습니다. 특히 성모 마리아 상은 7세기경에는 트라브존에서 활동했던 익명의 화가에 의해 그려졌는데, 그 뒤 이곳이 묵상을 할 수 있는 가장 중요한 장소 중 하나로 알려지면서 순례자들이 점차 증가하게 되었습니다. 그 후 오랫동안 수도사와 여행자들의 인기를 누리다가 1916~1918년 사이의 트라브존 점령 기간 중에는 러시아에 점유되었으며, 1923년 이후로 급속히 황폐해졌습니다. 1972년에 이르러 트라브존 시가 수멜라 수도원을 인수하고 박물관으로 복구하려고 했지만, 이미 많은 귀중한 유적들이 파손되거나 도난을 당한 후였습니다. 그리고 현재 복구 작업이 다시 진행 중이며 언젠가 다시 옛 명성을 찾으리라 생각됩니다
